Role Playing Gamers rejoice, Imagineer has brought fantasy and adventure to the Nintendo 64 game console in the form of Quest64 a third person three dimensional RPG, sold by THQ Inc. The game takes place in the realm of Celtland a once beautiful island that has become tainted. The player takes on the role of Brain a apprentice Spirit tamer who's is just learning how to use his powers. At the start of the game your father, Lord Bartholomy, himself a spirit tamer, has vanished while attempting to recover Eletale's book. The book holds the powerful secrets of the Spirit tamers. Brain is determined to find his father and has vowed to find him and the book, returning Celtland to its former glory. The Brain model and its animations are wonderfully done leaving hardly anything to be desired with the same being said for the creatures that he encounters on his journeys. The towns folk; however, are not done as well. The models and textures are still excellent but the movements appear have been rushed. Another problem is with the outdoor environment, some elements like the trees are not truly three dimensional but rotate when you walk around them. This is similar to the older 3D games like Wolfenstein were no matter were you walk the furniture and dead bodies still look like you are seeing it from the same angle as before. These two things do not take away from the enjoyment of the game in any way, but still seem as if they would have been easy to correct. Hardly anything can be found wrong with the environments of Celtland. The lighting and textures are superbly done and truly give the feeling of a fantasy realm. One of the events that I truly loved was the transition from night to day and back again. One of the things that did bug me was the Chase camera. In some of the tighter areas like caves and hallways the camera would not stay behind the player and clipped its way through walls and solid rock. This doesn't get in the way of play but it does detract from the realism the player feels when he is in those areas. Something that potential buyers/renters/players should keep in mind is that this is a RPG or Role Playing game not Adventure like the Zelda games. Which means that the fighting is done in turn based battles sequences. You don't see the monsters walking around and don't know when you well enter a battle sequence. I'm not meaning this as a negative because its not. I simply wanted you to know this before hand. An example of turn based fighting would be the Final Fantasy Games. One other thing that potential buyers/renters/players should know is that a N64 controller Pak is needed to save your game data. You can still play the game but believe me this game is a long one and you wont be able to finish it in one sitting unless your truly desperate for something to do with your life. Besides it always a good idea to save often. Quest64 is content rated E - Everyone, containing mild animated violence, rating by ESRB. ©1998 Imagineer CO., LTD.
