While not a fantasy/adventure game per say... you got to love it.... Its the classic man o digital cool, Mario, and he's doing it RPG style. This is definitely a fun change from Mario's classic side scrolling games. As the game begins Mario is once again called upon to save Princess Toadstool from Bowser. But after doing so he is needed to face an even larger and deader foe on his quest for the seven stars. Played in a limited three dimensional game world, the graphics are most likely the best ever developed for the Super Nintendo. The characters and landscapes were well done. The battle animations are good and fit their characters. For example Mario has Super jump, Ultra Jump, and shell attacks while Bowser has Chomp, Poison gas and several more. The game screen is limited in that you are always looking at it from the same angle, no rotating. The only problems with this is that Mario is some times unable to be seen behind a object; however, this rarely ever happens and hinders the game play. And when Mario is jumping from on spot to another it is often difficult to judge the distance and takes lots of practice. One of the things I enjoyed about Super Mario RPG was that, unlike other role playing games, you are able to see the creatures you will fight as you walk around the different worlds and are able to avoid fights if the need arises. When you do run into or touch a creature the screen then switches to a battle screen. The battle sequences, like most other RPG games, is turn based. In the game many of the classic Mario enemies return with lots of new once to discover and defeat. And the rumor is that Bowser has turned over a new leaf. Unfortunately for all you Luigi fans out there the man in green isn't in this adventure. Another added bonus to this game is its mini games that Mario can play giving you an break from the real game. Just a few examples are Melody Bay, Moleville Mountain mining car race, and the beetle race! Hey is that mushroom kid playing a gameboy?!?! The only thing that I trully did not like about this game was two of the magic abilities that some of the enemies possesed. These were the ability to turn members of the players team into mushrooms and scarcrows. As mushroom the characters are complitly incapacitated unable to defend or attack. As the scarecrow the characters loss all abilities except that they can still attack by jumping ontop of the enemy. This attacks wouldnt be that bad except that that they last for to long a time period. Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars is content rated K-A, Kids to Adult, Ages 6+, rating by ESRB. ©1998 Nintendo and © are registered trademarks of Nintendo of America Inc. |
